The color and finish of your hardwood floors can change how an entire room feels. Whether you need to match existing floors for an addition, change color during a refinish, or create a custom stain, we mix and test samples before applying color to the full floor. Wood species, grain pattern, sanding sequence, and lighting all affect the final result, so we review sample boards in the actual space before moving forward.

Our Detailed Process
Color Consultation
We discuss your goals: matching existing floors, changing color, or creating something custom. We consider your home's style, lighting, and existing color palette. We bring stain samples and show you how different colors look on your specific wood species.
Existing Color Analysis (If Matching)
If matching existing floors, we analyze the current color, sheen, and any aging or patina. We identify the wood species and may take a small sample to analyze the stain composition. We note lighting conditions and how the color appears in different areas.
Stain Mixing & Sample Preparation
We mix stains on-site to create the desired color. For matching, we blend multiple stain bases to achieve the exact shade. We prepare sample boards using the same wood species, sanding process, and application method we'll use on your floor.
Sample Review & Approval
We present sample boards in your actual space so you can see how the color looks in your lighting conditions. We can make adjustments—lighter, darker, more or less red/yellow tones—until you're completely satisfied. No work proceeds until you approve.
Color Application
Once approved, we apply the stain using the same technique and conditions as the samples. We ensure even application and consistent color throughout. For specialty finishes like whitewash, we follow specific multi-step processes.
Finish Application
We apply the protective finish (polyurethane) in the sheen level that matches your existing floors or your preference. We ensure the finish enhances the color without altering it. Multiple coats provide durability and the desired sheen.
Final Color Verification
After the finish cures, we verify the color in different lighting conditions and compare it to existing floors if applicable. If the project involves a transition, we check that the color and sheen sit naturally with the surrounding floor.
